Metal Oxide Powders and Dispersions
Nanomaterials of metal oxides,
including cerium oxide (ceria), and zinc oxide
have experienced tremendously heightened interest
in the past few years, once again due to the
unique macroscopic properties of the materials,
resulting from their small particle size.
For example, ceria has been implemented as
an abrasive material for semiconductor and
optical fine polishing applications (known
as chemical mechanical planarization or just
CMP), and as a highly reactive catalyst for
various chemical processes. Zinc oxide, with
a particle size in the sub-10nm range, exhibits
a distinctly reduced visible light scattering
characteristic, which results in its inherent
transparency in this size range. ZnO, although
fundamentally transparent at this size, preserves
its ultraviolet light absorption properties
when restricted to this size range.
